What are benign breast disorders?

All diseases and disorders affecting the breast are not cancerous In fact 90percent are benign of which some need treatment and others don’t need any intervention. It can affect women as well as men.

What all conditions are considered as benign breast disorders?

Fibroadenoma :

breast mouse.

Fibromyalgia :

Pain and heaviness in the breast usually occurs prior to menstruation

Cyst :

simple – fluid filled cavity which is lined by endothelium

How do fibroadenomas occur?

Due to hormonal function and fluctuation.

What is fibroadenoma and what is the treatment?

Fibroadenoma is a benign i.e non cancerous lump occuring in the breast. Fibroadenomas are less than 2cm in size do not need surgery and are kept on a follow up 6 monthly or yearly to assess any increase in size.

For fibroadenoma more than 3cm, we advise excision followed by biopsy. Based on the biopsy report, further plan is decided.

Surgery is done under general anaesthesia. It is performed as a day care surgery. Recovery is fast and you can join work from the next day.

Can fibroadenoma change to cancer?

Minimal malignant potential

What is a breast cyst?

Breast cyst is a fluid filled sac. They are usually benign and need aspiration. However if there is debris or suspicious material, it needs to be excused and Confirmed by biopsy.

They may be single or multiple.

What is an intraductal papilloma?

Intraductal papillary are small growths that occur within the milk ducts of breast. Cud nipple discharge present with intraductal papilloma? Yes, nipple discharge presents wth it.

Treatment of intraductal papilloma?

Usually excision is the solution. However, in a few cases ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is also present.

I have sclerosing adenitis diagnosed on mammogram, what do I do?

U need to undergo a breast biopsy to confirm or refute the presence of atypical hyperplasia, lobular carcinoma in situ or ductal carcinoma in situ. Owing to distorted shape they are often confused with malignancy.

Do medicines help in breast lump treatment?

Medicines can decrease pain in case of painful lump and fibroadenosis. Lumps vary with hormonal changes.
